Keratosis Pilaris

Keratosis Pilaris is a common condition affecting approximately 25-50% of all people to some degree. It presents as small, rough, pink-red bumps usually on the backs of the arms, thighs, and cheeks. The condition usually presents in childhood and generally exists throughout their life and may be exacerbated by certain conditions such as pregnancy.

The cause of keratosis pilaris is unknown though there is a strong genetic basis with patients seeing similar lesions in other family members. Because it is so common, some physicians consider it to be a normal variant generally recommending topical agents such as retinoids and AHA’s and BHA’s to improve the appearance and help reduce follicular plugs.
