Skin Care

Daily application of skin care products is often underestimated due to the common assumption that they ‘don’t work’. This is often the case as the majority of skincare products will feel nice on the skin and temporarily plump up the lines, but don’t produce any long term improvements due to a lack of ‘active’ ingredients.

The main function of Moisturisers is to:

  • Enhance the appearance of the skin by retaining moisture levels
  • Promote and restore the skins barrier function
  • Attract and retain water in the epidermis
  • Create a barrier to reduce Trans-Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL)
  • They may or may not act as a carrier for active ingredients

There are 3 main categories used to perform these functions, they are: Occlusives, Humectants and Emollients:

Occlusive agents

  • Prevent TEWL by forming a hydrophobic film on the skins surface
  • Best applied to damp skin
  • Often feels greasy (exception of silicone derivatives)
  • Often combined with humectants to further increase skin hydration

Humectant agents

  • Water soluble agents capable of high water absorption
  • Able to attract water from the atmosphere if humidity is greater than approx. 80%
  • Attract water molecules from the dermis to the epidermis so should be combined with an occlusive agent to prevent TEWL
  • Can have a ‘plumping’ effect of the outer layer of skin due to increased water levels improving the appearance of fine lines and skin texture
  • Examples: Glycerin, Urea, AHA’s, Propylene glycol

Emollient agents

  • Oily substances used in moisturisers and cleansers for their moisturising properties
  • Soften and smooth the epidermis by filling in spaces between the desquamating corneocytes (Outer skin cells)
